LIGHT PIECES + INSTALLATION
The use of light and darkness within Hylands’ practice has manifested in many installations. She has long experimented with light as a medium creating luminous and mesmerising pieces that often appear to float within the space.
Central to creating her painted light installations is the actual layering of colours and the surface manipulation of the paint when applying these layers. When light is thrown into the equation, all is revealed. Soundscapes have often accompanied these pieces.
The light pieces are generally large scale inviting an immersive experience for the viewer. They are often shown in darkened rooms which by nature changes the way the viewer reacts to a space encouraging convergence toward the light and at the same time slight apprehension and introspection.
