PAINTINGS
Hylands’ paintings are created on the ground. She hovers above and around them in the act of applying the many layers of paint – often poured - to build up the surface. This action of hovering over the work imitates that of snorkeling which is implicit to the research for her practice.
She imbues her work with marine references such as colours, gestures, fluidity and translucency – which along with the scale of her work (most of which is large) - manifest to create a sense of depth and immersion for the viewer.
